Second in the Technical Dialogue Series, the Yerevan Technical Dialogue will be co-convened by the Türkiye COP31 Presidency, the G20 Global Land Initiative at the UNCCD, IUCN and the ENACT Partnership to bring together the partners and stakeholders working on Rio Synergies and attending CBD COP17.
The Ulaanbaatar Technical Dialogue built on the journey initiated in Antalya and reinforced a central message: the priority now is to shift the discourse on the synergies on land, biodiversity and climate from ambition to action. This means putting national priorities and implementation needs at the centre and making better use of the expertise, partnerships and resources that already exist.
Building directly on these discussions and outcomes of the Ulaanbaatar Technical Dialogue and shifting the focus to “Nature as the Integrator”, the Yerevan Technical Dialogue will explore how biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration and Nature-based Solutions can help strengthen coherent, practical and country-led implementation across the three Rio Conventions. Furthermore, the dialogue will help contextualise the Rio synergies discourse within the CBD framework, including its contribution to NBSAP implementation and the delivery of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The dialogue will also be informed by, and build upon, ongoing discussions on policy coherence across the Rio Conventions under the biodiversity and climate change agenda topic (item18(a)).
Crucially, the Yerevan Technical Dialogue will further refine a common set of implementation priorities, country-led actions, and partner support measures, with the overarching objective of identifying concrete early synergy actions that countries could announce at UNFCCC COP31 through the Rio Synergies Group for Action. Moreover, it will help identify technical partners who may be well positioned to support these actions through their existing mandates, expertise, and available resources.
